Last Saturday, we drove a short distance along Lake Geneva to visit one of Switzerland's most popular landmarks; the Chateau de Chillon. Of all the castles we've visited thus far, this is certainly the largest.... dating back to the 12th century and subsequently added to until it is now comprised of over 100 individual buildings joined together. I continue to be awestruck by the architecture and sheer amount of history in these places. This castle is particularly famous for being the subject of a poem by Lord Byron, "The Prisoner of Chillon", about a monk who was chained to one of the pillars (seen in the bottom row; middle photo) for six years! The window pictured below was across from the pillar but his chain was cut short so that he was never able look out of it. Seems like a perfect "real life" haunted house to me!
I think we'll take a break from the castles for a while. You can see the effect it is having on my crew.... my guy (who has been such a good sport) is absolutely riveted and my girls have turned a little "Larry, Curly and Mo". I'm wondering if there is a good college football game or a hayride around here? :)
One of us headed to Notre Dame for weekend football, the rest of us headed for a train ride to a pumpkin patch with papaw on Saturday. We'll take you along in spirit. Did I see Bama is #1?
