What I'm Reading..

I've reluctantly just finished reading this "delectable" book recommended by a friend... a compilation of, yes, mouth-watering recipes, but more importantly, stories of celebration, community, healing, and love found when we take the time to gather around the table.

So much of the Ms. Niequists words resonated deeply... perhaps because some of my best childhood memories involve big family gatherings around a kitchen counter crammed with Aunt Linda's camp stew, Mamaw's cornbread and peach tarts, or my mom's chocolate cream pie all washed down with jugs of sweet tea..... or maybe because now as a mother myself; my favorite time of day is when I light the candles and call the family to dinner.... when we sing our grace and share our day and a few (ahem) uninterrupted minutes together....

"I want you to stop running from thing to thing, and to sit down at the table, to offer the people you love something humble and nourishing, like soup and bread, like a story, like a hand holding another hand while you pray.  We live in a world that values us for how fast we go, for how much we accomplish, for how much life we can pack into one day.  But I'm coming to believe it's in the in-between spaces that our lives change, and that the real beauty lies there"

spilled milk and all... I agree, the beauty lies there.
