Food: The Supper Club

It's true, I've struggled a bit in the cooking department since my move to Switzerland six months ago..... everything from the logistics of grocery shopping, to finding the necessary ingredients, to working with my fondly referred to "easy bake oven".  But, in the spirit of this goal.... I'm trying to enjoy "la cuisine" again; baking and cooking my way thru these two cookbooks this year...... one with my neighbor here in Geneva and one with my neighbor back in the States.... (aren't good neighbors the best?!?)......

It's not what you might think though..... my neighbor from the States actually sent me the French cookbook and upon surmising (rightly so) that I hadn't quite gotten around to it; challenged me to taking turns choosing a recipe or two every couple of weeks and both trying it out and comparing notes (did I mention she went to culinary school and is an amazing cook?).  Ha!  We've just finished up our third recipe and I have to admit that it is a lot of fun.... I'm definitely stepping out of my comfort zone on this one.... but when I'm rewarded with a delicious potato gratin or lovely madeleine.... it is definitely worth it.

Now,  the other "supper club" was born simply out of a mutual literal "hungering" among expats for some good 'ol Southern comfort food.... with each of us hosting a southern (as in south of the Tennessee border) meal once a month..... a great excuse to get together and indulge in casseroles, cobblers, cornbread and the like....... It actually takes a bit more work because cream of chicken soup, buttermilk, self-rising flour, and cheddar cheese are hard to come by here..... but, my oh my, it sure tastes like home.....

Have you ever hosted or participated in a supper club?

  1. What a great little challenge. I would love it if you would share some of your recipes. I had a dream last night that you were in town. Wishful thinking!

    1. Ha! I wish I were.... soon enough. Actually the photos above are some of our creations thus far..... click on the recipe names for links. I'll share the good ones in the future. We'll just let the disasters go unmentioned. :)

  2. We used to have a group of five couples that would get together every few months for an "International Dinner." The hosting couple would chose a country and each of us would make menu items from that particular country. Of course, we'd have signature drinks and wine to boot! Couples moved away, got divorced, the usual stuff, but it's time to revise this very cost effective way of "traveling."
Love, love, LOVE your posts! They always make my day, so thank you!!

  3. The Madeleines look great. I'm going to punt on those, no pans. Sorry excuse but that's life this week! Potatoes???
I'm sending my favorite 'help' book over with 'your guy',(I just ordered a new one for myself) THE FOOD LOVER'S TIPTIONARY, by Sharon Tyler Herbst. It will give you all the substitutions....for everything including your southern favs - buttermilk, cream, self-rising flour. L

  4. Loving this idea. I was in a cocktail club - we were to lazy & young to cook - but had a blast!! Also did a dinner
co-op in which each of of cooked on Mon, Tues & Thurs - we delivered dinner to the other families & that way we all had dinner in at least 3 nights a week & only cooked one night. (usually had leftovers the 4th night)
