"holding court"

I was charmed upon seeing this group of local "elders" lined up along a bench in Italy over the weekend.... chatting and observing us tourists as we strolled into town craving alabaster souvenirs,  wood-fired pizza and homemade gelato...  Made me wonder where the wives were..... I'd like to think enjoying a bit of solitude before preparing the evening meal or, even better, gathered around the kitchen table with some friends and a bottle of wine... chatting about the men. :)
