Celebrating...

Today my sweet Holden Rose turns 9 years old.  It seems like yesterday I was toting that little bundle of love around with me on my hip; smothering her chubby neck and wrists with kisses and joyfully watching her sleep in "june-bug" position in her crib.   Now she has grown into a laid-back, inquisitive, kind-hearted and.... sometimes mischievous little girl. :)  Her eyes sparkle when she giggles. She gives a hug like she means it.  She can hang with the boys no problem (and has the bruises to prove it).  She loves God, Star Wars, the Rainbow Loom and strawberries.  We'll celebrate over a dinner of chocolate chip pancakes (and cupcakes) tonight.  When she blows out her candle; I'll be offering up a prayer that it comes true.  And when I tuck her in tonight; I'll say a prayer of thanksgiving for letting her be mine....

And just like that......

Hey ya'll!  I've missed you!
 I hope this post finds everyone chock-full of summertime goodness.
My apologies for the "crickets" around here these last couple of months; but I (and, hopefully you) was/were out soaking up summertime pleasures and listening to the real thing.

This morning I took my girls to school with an anxious and bittersweet tug in my heart.
I always feel like a mama bird on the first day of school... nudging my babies to learn how to fly with confidence while secretly squelching the desire to keep them safely protected in my nest.  I'm so thankful they gave me smiles this morning as we headed off ..... my prayer is that those smiles are still there when they return! :)

...... and as they say,  "we will now return you to our regularly scheduled programming"...
can't wait to catch up with everyone!

2013 is the year for.....

Well, here we are a week into the new year and although I've just been diagnosed with pneumonia and I'm hyped up on medicines..... life moves on.

If 2012 was about embracing a spirit of adventure for our move abroad, 2013 is going to be about learning to enjoy the ride.  "Joy" or the pursuit of joy has been a recurring theme in my life of late and I intend to "take the hint".  After all, isn't that the end goal of any New Year's resolution?.... to experience  a sense of well-being and peace regardless of our circumstances (it's certainly a stretch for me right now... but what the heck.... worthy resolutions are never easy).  I'm going to expect it, choose it and do my "darndest" to live it each day with the good Lord's help.

Here are a few other aspirations I have as well......

Going back to school. - One of my highest values as a mother is instilling a love of learning in my children.  Unfortunately, I've let life's busyness get in the way of my modeling this in a meaningful way for my girls.  So, I'll be diving in to French lessons and picking up more books.

Discovering my inner athlete. - This is the year to kick that decades old smirk and lie I've been telling myself; "You may be a lot of things; but you are not athletic!"; to the curb.  You'll find me taking tennis lessons this year so that I can play with my daughter and exploring Switzerland on the hiking trails.  Some snowshoeing is surely in order as well.

Learning to linger. - My type-A, obsessive, slightly controlling personality (ok, so owning it is half the battle).... tends to always have me thinking about what I need to do next instead of enjoying what is right in front of me.  Last year's resolution went a long way in helping me to "stop and smell the roses" but I still have a way to go.  This really hit home a month or so ago when I was talking with a French friend and bemoaning the fact that I can't get a to-go cup of coffee anywhere.  She politely informed me that the French actually consider it "uncouth" to walk while drinking or eating (smoking too.... go figure); and that you should be able to sit down long enough to enjoy your food (perhaps that is why there is only one drive-thru that I know of in Geneva as well).  So.... I'm going to start this resolution by carrying over our Christmas tradition of eating by candlelight (yes, this surprisingly does seem to slow things down); followed by the reading of a daily devotion by one of the girls..... baby steps.

And lastly, taking another cue from the Europeans...

Becoming a doting wife.  Of all of the cultural differences I've noticed over the last six months of living in Switzerland; probably the one that has hit me the hardest is my observation of the interaction between couples here.  A day does not go by where I do not see many couples of all ages together..... walking hand in hand past my front door; sitting in cafes completely engaged in conversation; well dressed (in the sense that they are certainly making an effort to look good for one another); and seemingly enjoying one another's company....... nary an electronic device in sight!  Now, I have absolutely no data to support whether this makes a significant impact on divorce rates or marital happiness but I'd have to at least give them an "A" for effort and I have to think this concentrated undivided attention would raise the joy quotient in any relationship.  So.... I'm going to make it a priority.... I don't think my guy will mind. :)

How are your resolutions going thus far?

P.S.  Remember this post?  I'll be adding engraved charms with the words "adventure" for 2012 and "joie de vivre" for 2013 to serve as a reminder and be passed on to Marlowe..... still my favorite piece of jewelry.

Reality Check......

..... so I talk a lot about "stuff" on this blog..... things I want or adore; pretty things to wear or to decorate my home.... but the "thing" I'm longing most for in life looks more like this......

...... growing old in the company of my husband;
the warmth of a small hand tucked in mine;
sharing a glass of wine with a girlfriend;
offering a smile to a stranger on the street;
savoring the taste of a freshly baked croissant;
a familiar voice on the other end of the line;
the sound of chatter around the dinner table;
the wind mussing up my hair;
feeling the belly ache after a good laugh;
the rush of trying something new.......

.......summed up.... experiencing God's love.

I never want to lose sight of the goodness that money can never buy.

signing off for the weekend folks.... have a great one!

The Good Life.....

The Swing

How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!

Up in the air and over the wall,
Till I can see so wide,
River and trees and cattle and all
Over the countryside--

Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown--
Up in the air I go flying again,
Up in the air and down!
Robert Louis Stevenson
My daughter, Ashtyn, captured this moment last week when her great-uncle decided to take a whirl on her tree swing and it is now one of my most beloved photos.  Why is it, that as adults, we so often dismiss those simple things that can bring so much joy?
Is there some "childish" activity that you still engage in that brings a smile to your face or delights your soul?

A Photo a Day:  Week 23 (Rewind)

It's no secret that I love tradition.  Take a look at any photo album in my home and you will find photos taken in the same setting, during the same event, year after year.  Some may find it incredibly boring but I find it comforting and treasure the predictability of long-standing customs like this one of taking a photo on the steps of our condo immediately upon our arrival to the beach each year.  (Beautiful back-drop no?)....... just look how my babies have grown!

And on a completely separate note......this type of photo chronology also helps one discover when they've completely gone awry in the hair color department...... which is invaluable too..... must fix when I return :)

...... I'll embrace spontaneity next month when we move!

Hope everyone is having a great week!

Thumbs Up.....

Child:
I have two little thumbies
They're with me day and night.
My favorite thumb is on my left.
The other's on my right
My thumbies always comfort me
when I am feeling sad.
They help me to protect myself
when I am feeling mad.
My thumbies help me fall asleep
when I am feeling tired.
I do not know how better friends
could ever be desired.
My mother says it's time to quit--
that sucking thumbs is bad.
And every time I suck my thumbs,
my mom gets very mad.
Mom:
You've got to quit. Don't suck your thumbs--
your left one or your right.
It's pushing all your front teeth out.
It's ruining your bite.
It might take years to get straight teeth,
with braces on your mouth.
It isn't fun. Believe me, son.
So keep your thumbs down south.

All of my girls have been thumb suckers (my youngest two still are) as was I as a child.  Problem is, I really don't mind it that much...... when I see them sucking their thumbs it reminds me that they are my babies and it makes me want to share a cuddle with them....... and who cares?..... they are going to need braces anyway! :)

Have a great weekend everyone!

A Swiss Miss.....

........ it seems that is what I'm destined to become.  It still hasn't completely sunk in, but while you are reading this my guy and I will be in Switzerland checking out schools and finding a home for our family to move to this summer for three or so years. When I first learned of my husband's job transfer a couple of months ago, I thought "God sure has a funny sense of humor" for we had recently gone through a complete gutting and renovation of our "forever" house (moving out for a year) and were happily embarking on our cozy and wonderful "forever" life in the city where both Chris, I and our three girls were born.

But as is often the case...... God has different plans for our family...... ones that involve leaving our comfort zone; loosening our grip on some material things and embracing the unknown......

....... in an amazingly breathtaking setting.....

...... and for that, I say "thank you."

So big picture, I'm good...... excited about the potential for travel; experiencing a new culture; opening my girls' eyes to the bigger world out there and trusting that everything is going to be great.  Little picture; not so good...... I'm "freaking out" about all that has to be done; what we're going to do with our house; how exactly you ship 100 stuffed animals and a tween (my middle schooler) across the ocean intact; the fact that none of us speak French; how I'm going to survive sticker shock and get all my laundry done in those teeny tiny washer and dryers! :)....... not to mention the emotional side of things like leaving friends and family..... eeek!  I'm tackling one thing at a time.

....This week's question to be answered........ what exactly do kitchens look like in Switzerland..... I'm guessing not like the ones on my Pinterest board!?!? :)

Can't wait to catch up with you all when I return!

Gratefulness....

........yesterday was one of those days.  It started off great..... Chris was off work; the girls slept late; I went and got doughnuts to surprise the girls for breakfast; made it to an early morning workout...... and then, while reading books with her sisters on our bed; Marlowe fell off and caught her lip on the corner of our bedside table on the way down.  One hospital, four hours, three doctors, one surgery, hundreds of tears, 6 stitches, the possibility of scarring, two distraught sisters and two exhausted parents later...... all I wanted to do was crawl back in bed.

But, here's the thing.  Once I finally got my nerves in check all I really felt was grateful.....

...... grateful that Chris decided not to go to exercise class while leaving our oldest to babysit;
...... grateful that Marlowe hit her lip instead of her eye;
...... grateful that we have a Children's Hospital close to our home;
.......grateful to hear Marlowe singing in the backseat despite the fact that her lip was split completely open;
.......grateful for the opportunity to rock my baby and sing her her favorite songs to soothe her;
.......grateful for friends to call and check on our girls and provide support and even dinner;
.......grateful for friendly hospital nurses and doctors;
.......grateful to return home with my baby patched up and swollen but smiling;
.......grateful to tuck all my girls safely in their bed;
.......grateful for the gift of another day with my family regardless of the circumstances.

Resolved: A Picture a Day

...... so while many people are likely resolving to take a multi-vitamin a day in the New Year; I'm resolving to take a photo each day.

..... and why? you ask add something like that to an already crammed "to do" list?  Well, a couple of reasons:  1) I'm horrible at keeping a journal of any kind and this will be a more creative and fun diary of sorts; and 2) (this one's deep) :) To help me achieve a much loftier and worthwhile goal.....  being more present in my own life.  I've noticed thru writing blog posts over the last several months actually, that when I have a camera in hand or I am consciously looking to be inspired; that I am more alert and engaged in the moment and in my day-to-day surroundings.....I'm on the look-out for pretty things; listening more intently; my mind is quieter; and most importantly, I'm happier......

..... which is as beneficial as a Centrum any day. :)

Memoirs: The Yearly Photo Album

I've finished updating this book for the year; but before I can officially close-out 2011; I need to finish this project..... our family photo album.  Unfortunately, the days of printing out photos ended for me upon the receipt of my first digital camera some 7 years ago and I'm dreadfully pitiful at scrapbooking.  So in their place I've committed to creating one album each year capturing our vacation adventures, birthdays, milestones, and miscellany of everyday life.  I use Shutterfly because it is easy to upload photos and add text to the pages and mostly because I prefer a consistent look to create a library of these black leather 8 x 11 treasure troves of our family's history.

In addition to my own commentary on the pages documenting our family's history; this year I'll be reserving the last page to capture the top events in the world as well.  I'm often amazed at how my memory fails me when prompted to recall what was happening in any given year.  I think it will be great for my girls to look back when they are older and "remember when" too.....

Happy Birthday!......

..........to my sweet Marlowe.  Two years ago today we were blessed with the best Christmas gift ever.....this precious baby girl who brings so many smiles and much laughter to our home.  She is the youngest of my three girls and the last baby for me so I'm a little tearful as I say good-bye today to the age 1 and officially enter the toddler years.  Being a mother truly is my greatest joy.

I love this quote by Toni Morrison:

Grown don't mean nothing to a mother.  A child is a child.  They get bigger, older, but grown?  What's that suppose to mean?  In my heart it don't mean a thing.  ~ Beloved, 1987

I think I'll always feel that way about my girls too.

Memoirs: Christmas' past

Christmas Memories

A couple of years ago; we were vacationing with some friends and my girlfriend pulled out this book:

.........she was updating hers from the previous Christmas and we got the best laugh as she read aloud some of the funny events from years past.  I was immediately reminded of how quickly my memory lapses following such a busy time and I became taken with the idea of chronicling my own family's Christmas dinners, visitors, gifts, Christmas card and other special happenings.

Capturing 20 years of Christmas memories; this book allows you to record customs and traditions unique to your family.  Granted, it may not be the most "stylish" of tomes on your bookshelf (a business opportunity for someone so inclined to "spruce" the idea up a bit!); it has already become one of my most treasured heirlooms.

A great gift to give your own family this year or for the sentimental gal (like me) on your list! :)

This pretty much sums up.........

.... things in my house; especially on the weekends.  And when I'm tempted to squelch the loud giggles, the tumbling about and the hundreds of interruptions; I'm reminded that in just a few short years all will be perhaps a little too quiet and I'll be longing for that circus to come back to town.
